The problem: your eyes waste time
When you read normally, your eyes don't glide smoothly along a line. They move in quick jumps called saccades, separated by short pauses (fixations) during which your brain actually captures the words. On top of that come involuntary back-skips and the time it takes to jump from one line to the next.
All that movement costs time and adds nothing to comprehension. That's exactly what RSVP removes.
How RSVP works
In RSVP mode, text is presented one word at a time, always in the center of the screen. Your eyes no longer need to move: they stay fixed while words flash by at a pace you choose, measured in words per minute (wpm).
The result: you cut out the time spent on saccades and back-skips, and you also reduce subvocalization, the inner voice that pronounces each word and caps your speed around 200 to 250 wpm.
What about Spritz?
Spritz is a refinement of RSVP. It colors one specific letter of each word, the optimal recognition point, and aligns every word on that point. Your eye instantly finds the center of each word, making fast scrolling far more comfortable.
Does RSVP hurt comprehension?
This is the key question. At moderate speeds, comprehension stays strong, because RSVP forces you forward without re-reading and limits subvocalization. But past a certain threshold, your brain no longer has time to absorb meaning, especially with complex texts where you'd normally pause and reflect.
The right approach: ramp up speed gradually, and dial it back as soon as you feel yourself slipping. RSVP shines for articles, novels and clearly written text; it's less suited to very technical content.
